Afrobeats have been taking over our airwaves for the past year now, giving huge influences on different music genres. A few of the afrobeats artist have done collabs with hiphop, dancehall, and soca artist…Timaya, Wizkid and Ayo Jay just to name a few.

However, the Nigerian born singer and song writer, Patrick Nnaemeka Okorie who we know as ‘Patoranking‘ is one of the big names in Afrobeat we all are getting familiar to.

Patoranking sat down for an interview with Winford Williams of OnStage where he spoke about making a name for himself around the world, his music selection of choosing Dancehall, and his experience in Jamaica. He revealed that he was a galala dancer (dance heavily influenced by dancehall) before actually becoming a singer.

He also spoke about his perception on Jamaica, his success in music, and the album he released. His album named “God Over Everything” was debuted in 2016 which reached number 4 on Billboards Reggae Albums Chart.

“The perception we have, about the island generally is quite different. Even the media don’t show us what we need to know. They tell us what they want us to know, but they don’t show us what we need to know so it’s two different things…. I would say, I’m not blown because I’ve been following the culture for a very long time…..”

In fact, that was his first time in Jamaica when he did the interview with Onstage.“People keep asking, are yuh a yardie…and I be like yea I’m from a yaad” he said, which is his response to people thinking he’s from Jamaica.

When Williams asked if Africa was the reason for his success or the West, the No Kissing Baby singer expressed that Africa was indeed the main reason for his successful career. “Dance a yaad before yuh dance aboard…If it’s not big at home, it can’t be big aboard” he said. In addition to his success, Patoranking strongly believes that Afrobeat is the future because of the genre becoming more mainstream and it is in fact dominating the music industry.

He also revealed he is working on a project with dancehall artist, Busy Signal and Soca singer, Machel Montano for summer 2017.
